Greetings W&J Parents,

We are so happy that your student is attending W&J. We are very proud of the caliber of our graduates and hear positive feedback from employers regularly about how prepared W&J students are for the workforce. Those who avail themselves to the resources of Career Services will quickly learn how we partner with the Faculty and the Alumni of the College in supporting students’ pursuits.  On a campus this size, students will be able to have direct access to faculty (not just graduate assistants), interact with successful alumni of the College and be supported by our department and others. Students are urged to come see us “early and often” and not wait until their last semester to meet us.  We strive to get to know the students and work with them on developing their particular strategies for securing opportunities (whether employment, internship, or graduate & professional school). While we are here for them and happy to help, it is imperative that students actively engage in the career planning process. It is never too early to begin. 

We are pleased to be a College Central Network (CCN) campus, an online system which allows students and alumni to access full-time, internship, part-time, shadowing, and summer opportunities. Students and alumni are able to connect with employers, and post resumes and cover letters. There are typically over 500,000 national postings and numerous postings specific to W&J. New jobs are added daily. The W&J CCN also features over 270 W&J mentors, including trustees of the College, to help guide students in their career exploration. Many amazing connections have been fostered through this network.

We are also members of several recruiting consortia, including LARC (Liberal Arts Recruiting Consortium comprised of eight Greater Pittsburgh area liberal arts colleges and universities, who will share regional postings), WestPACS (47 member recruiting consortium of Western PA campuses) and PERC (a consortium dedicated to serving students in the education field).

We are also pleased to report the results of our most recent survey for the Class of 2016. The survey showed that 93% of the graduates were either employed or furthering their education.  An additional encouraging indicator was the number of employers that recruited on our campus this fall. When benchmarked with several of our peer institutions, we had a very successful year with over 50 companies/organizations actually on-campus — an excellent showing for a campus our size. Our most recent job fair, sponsored with WestPACS, had over 150 registered employers. 

Please encourage your student to work with our department as they implement their career plans.  In addition to the classic assistance on resumes, cover letters, interviewing (including video mock-interviews), pre-health portfolios, personal statements, and business/dining etiquette, we offer help on creating a professional online presence (such as LinkedIn), and help students develop the skill of "networking”. We have resources on all of these topics available online and in our office. Parents can be a tremendous resource by helping students complete a thorough 'inventory' of their network, an especially important skill in sourcing opportunities.

We also recognize that career planning can challenge ones need to be a bit more flexible. We encourage students to consider options with a 'bigger picture' in mind. Please consider W&J if your organization has any employment or internship opportunities. Also, consider serving as a resource to the W&J students by fielding questions about your own career paths; let us know if you would like to serve as a career mentor. We would love to have you join this network.
