Psychologists study behavior from a wide range of perspectives that include social, clinical, physiological, developmental, organizational, and cognitive psychology. As a member of the science division, the psychology department employs empirical methods to learn about behavior and the variables that affect it. The department also participates in a wide range of research and applied programs that intersect our discipline including neuroscience; mind, brain, and behavior; child development and education; and human resource management.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: All students must complete a minimum of eight courses in psychology including PSY 101 , 102 , 215 , and one advanced laboratory course from 405 , 406 , 425 , 427 , 465 , 475 , 485 , or 495. Students are also required to take MTH 225. In addition, majors must complete one 300-level  course (or one non-lab 400-level course) plus two courses from PSY 225, 235 , 245 , 265 , 275 , 285 , and 295. Please note that PSY 101PSY 215, and the advanced laboratory course must be completed successfully at W&J. The department also recommends that students take ENG 200 and COM 220.

MINOR REQUIREMENTS: All students must successfully complete a minimum of six courses in psychology. PSY 101 and 102 , and 215 are required of all minors. All other courses should be considered electives. At least two elective psychology courses must be taken from PSY 225 , 235 , 245 , 265 , 275 , 285 , and 295.

Sequencing: For both the major and the minor, successful completion of PSY 101 and 102 is required before any additional courses may be taken in psychology. With the exception of certain Intersession courses as noted in the Intersession listing of courses, students must successfully complete a 200-level PSY course before taking a 300-level PSY course. Students must successfully complete PSY 215 and a 300-level PSY course before taking an Advanced Laboratory course.

AP Policy: Students scoring a 5 on the Psychology Advanced Placement Test will receive credit for PSY 102 and will begin their study of psychology at W&J with PSY 101.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION MAJOR: The child development and education major is offered by the psychology department in cooperation with the education department.  The major consists of the following courses: EDU 201, 207, 301, 302, 303, 304, 350, 406, PSY 101, 102, 225, 265, 275, either PSY 330 or EDU 403, and either EDU 406 and 407 or 408 and 409.  Either EDU 406 and 407 (certification) or 408 and 409 (non-certification) serve as the capstone experience for the major.  Students majoring in Child Development and Education may not major or minor in Psychology.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION:  Students majoring in Child Development and Education may seek teacher certification in Early Childhood (PreK-4) or Upper Elementary (4-8).  See the Education (Teacher Certification) and Child Development and Education sections of the catalog for more information.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT EMPHASIS: The human resource management emphasis is open to majors in business administration or psychology who wish to prepare for the study of human resource management in graduate school and/or pursue a career in human resource management. To complete this program, a psychology major must complete the following courses as part of the major: PSY 101, 102, 225; one from 295, 303, or 392; and one from 235, 245, 324, or 330. In addition they must complete: ECN 101; ACC 211, 212; and BUS 301, 319 and 350. It is also strongly recommended that the student complete an internship in an industrial/organizational setting. Students interested in this program are advised to contact Professor Seltzer of the Department of Psychology.

MIND, BRAIN, AND BEHAVIOR PROGRAM: The Mind, Brain, and Behavior Program represents an interdisciplinary inquiry into the determinants of behavior. The program seeks to introduce students to this interdisciplinary undertaking by examining how sophisticated systems carry out functions such as vision, memory, and language. Focus is on understanding the determinants of behavior from multiple perspectives.  Psychology majors wishing to complete this program must take one of the following courses as part of their major: PSY 225, PSY 265, PSY 285, or PSY 311. In addition psychology majors must take: MBB 100: Mind, Brain, and Behavior, BIO 101, BIO 102, and two from PHL 123, PHL 125, PHL 220, and PHL 250.

NEUROSCIENCE EMPHASIS: The neuroscience emphasis represents an interdisciplinary program that can be pursued by students majoring in biology or psychology. Please refer to the catalog listing for further information on these courses of study. Students majoring in psychology must successfully complete PSY 500 or 501, or an approved research experience as part of the emphasis. In addition to their psychology major, students pursuing the neuroscience emphasis must successfully complete NSC 210, 300, and 400.

NEUROSCIENCE MINOR: Students not majoring in biology or psychology must complete the equivalent of six courses for the minor. These courses include two introductory science courses from two different disciplines (BIO 101 or 102, CHM 160, PHY 101 or 107, or PSY 101), the three core neuroscience courses (NSC 210, NSC 300, NSC 400), and a neuroscience-related research project that may be fulfilled by either an on-campus tutorial or independent study project, or a summer or Intersession internship.

Psychology Majors Planning to Study Abroad:
Please note that, in order to complete the psychology major, you must successfully complete PSY 215, Experimental Psychology, by the second semester junior year if you plan to study abroad during the fall semester of your senior year.
