Description

Working for the Washington and Jefferson Hockey Team is a great way to make money and friends.  Currently each season the team needs eight or more student workers to help run each home game. The program is run through work-study, so this is a paying job.  The Hockey team is a club sport, the season being October through March. Currently the Washington and Jefferson Hockey team is competing in their tenth season in its 2007-08.  The games are played at Southpointe; a state of the art arena less than 10 minutes away from campus.  You do not need to have a car to be qualified to work for the team.  Each game the student workers carpool so everyone arrives on time.  The Presidents are part of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL).  They are coached by John Harford.

If you work for the hockey team it not only pays well, but also helps you make a lot of great friends.  The group of student workers work closely with the players, coaches, and parents. Working for the hockey team is a great way to get involved with school activities, and a wonderful work-study that is available to students. The hockey team is trying hard to become Division one, and it is up to the student workers to run the games smoothly so fans enjoy their time.  There are a wide variety of responsibilities when working for the team.  There are a few different positions available.  First we need people to sell tickets at each game, along with raffle tickets and merchandise.  If that doesn't interest you there are positions down on the ice. These jobs include working in the penalty box, working the clock, or keeping statistics.  To work for the hockey team you do not need to know how to play hockey or how to ice-skate; it is simply a fun sport to get involved with. Although Washington and Jefferson is not a large campus, working for the hockey team is a good way to meet people and become comfortable as you enter into our College. Let's Go Presidents!

Events

The student workers are involved with raising money for the hockey team. Since school does not sponsor the team, they depend on donations to continue their seasons.  Once a year the team gets to play at Mellon Arena to raise money.  The student workers are in charge of selling tickets on campus to try to get students to come into Pittsburgh to watch the game.  Another activity each season is when we host a Monte Carlo Night to raise money as well.  This is a fun event that takes place each season and raises a lot of money for the team.  The Monte Carlo Night is an event that the team and parents look forward to; and it is up to the student workers to sell the tickets on campus.  The one downside to this event is that it is required for guests to be 21, so if you are not you cannot go.  This is not a choice made by the team, simply state law with gambling. Those are the two special events currently held each year to help get donations for the hockey team.  The team is always looking for suggestions on programs to host and any other fundraising ideas.

A Few Words from the Manager

Based on an interview conducted with Lauren Parcells, class of '08.

Working for the Hockey Team is a great way to network on campus.  I have gotten to meet so many other students and make lasting friendships.  I believe, as a freshman working for the team would be a wonderful place to make friends with the other student workers and the players themselves.  There are no pre-requisites for working with the team, nor do you need to know about hockey.  My favorite memory from working with the team is when I got to travel with the team last year, because I have bonded so much with the team and their parents.  The responsibilities for the workers are to help with Monte Carlo Night, a fundraiser that helps raise money for the team.  The event is so much fun, and student workers get to enjoy themselves at it.  The other exciting part about the hockey season is when the team plays at Mellon Arena; student workers help promote the team but they get to go along with the team.  I think working for the hockey team is all around a great experience that all students should consider.  You meet a lot of other students and get paid to watch a hockey game! What could be better?
