To protect yourself from outside attack it is a good idea to keep a firewall running. This can be the built in Windows Defender Firewall (if you are running a version of the Windows OS) or a third party program. Either one runs very well and each one should set up automatically, to protect you from outside attacks, when you install it. If you go into the advanced settings of either of the firewalls, you will see that most ports are inactive this is a good sign. The only ports that should be open are the basic 1-60 ports (used for basic computer programs such as ping, POP3, and other various utilities) and any ports that are used by a trusted program. Microsoft has recently opened up more ports for some of the background down loaders, which seem to have no holes, but other programs also have ports open. If you are worried about a non-trusted program opening up bad ports please find which ports the program uses, then please check the port numbers against the list on the page below.
