I Don't Wanna be Stuck in My Room!!
Are you a former high school athlete who wants the rush of playing on the field one last time? Are you a competitive person who loves to participate in sports of all varieties? Do you just want to meet new and exciting people? Here at Washington & Jefferson College there are many extracurricular activities that may appeal to your needs or personality traits. There are a number of Intramural Sports activities that you can participate in outside of the classroom.
From personal experiences playing intramural sports, they are a great way of getting to know your fellow classmates, staying active and competitive, and also enjoying yourself. Intramural sports are offered in the fall semester, intersession, and in the spring semester. Sports that are offered in the fall are:
- 3-on-3 Basketball
- Billiards
- Bowling
- Men's Flag Football
- Women's Flag Football
- Kickball
- One-Pitch Coed Softball Tournament
- Men's and Women's Tennis Singles Tournament
- Coed Ultimate Frisbee
- Women's Volleyball
- Coed Volleyball
- Coed Wallyball
During intersession there are not as many intramural sports to choose from due to the limited amount of time and students that are on campus. Students are required to take part in two intersession class periods during their college careers but may take up to four. Sports that are offered during intersession are:
- Men's and Women's Dodgeball
- Texas Hold 'Em tournaments
- Coed Bowling
Intramural Sports grow in number in the spring due to the rise in temperature and the increased number of students that return that did not take part in intersession. These sports in the spring include:
- Men's Basketball
- Women's Basketball
- Coed Softball League
- Coed Indoor Soccer
- Coed Ultimate Frisbee
Intramural sports in the fall are popular because of the variety of the sports being offered. Men's flag football is one of the most popular sports that is offered through the intramural program. Another major sport that occurs during intersession that is highly contested is Dodgeball. During the spring semester the most competitive sport is basketball. Many teams sign up to play these sports and games are often spirited. Intramural sports are also a great way for new students to meet and interact with other students who may be older and a little wiser to the day to day happenings at Washington & Jefferson. Meeting older college students can provide younger students with outlets that they might otherwise not have. I personally benefited from intramural activities as a freshman here. It offered me an opportunity to interact with many people that I have become close and developed relationships with over the years.
Alright Wilder, let's Dance!
One of the most popular sports in all of intramurals in terms of teams participating is Men's and Women's Intramural basketball. One of the main reasons Men's and Women's Intramural Basketball is one of the most popular sports is because of the number of students and teams that participate. In all there are 25 men's and women's teams that are participating in basketball in the spring semester. Twenty-two of those teams are in the men's bracket and three are in the women's bracket. To separate talent there are two brackets that separate the less experienced players from the upper level of talent. This system of bracketing teams allows for more competitive games and an overall more enjoyable time.
Being the most competitive of the sports during the year, Men's and Women's Intramural Basketball has six to eight regular season games and a bracketed playoff system to determine the winner of the league. Regular season games are played within each team's bracket to make play competitive. In the bracketed playoff system, teams are matched up against teams from the other bracket or teams within their own. Seeding depends on regular season records. Playoffs are the most intense times in intramural sports. Basketball is no different. Many people crowd around to watch their fellow classmates strive for the two things everyone who plays intramurals wants: an Intramural Championship T-Shirt and respect.

In the past three years playing intramural sports I have participated in the intersession and spring semester intramurals. I participate in the varsity football program in the fall and do not have the time to play intramurals. I decided my freshman year that playing intramurals would give me an opportunity to meet some new friends outside of my friends that I had on the football team. I came to find out that a lot of the football players participated in intramural events as well.
In my first intersession the first sport that was offered that seemed like a worthwhile and good time was dodgeball. The intramural sport was inspired by the movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. The student body as I remember it was wild with excitement because of the new release. I have continued to play dodgeball over the past years winning one championship and making it to the finals this past year. My favorite intramural sport however, is basketball. The competition in basketball is greater than it is in dodgeball and more teams are playing in the league. This year it seems is the most competitive in my experiences playing basketball. There are more teams and better players than in the past. Through all my experiences, intramurals has provided me with a way to meet new friends and experience competition.
